Dr. Cahill is a graduate of Southwestern University (Georgetown,TX) with a B.S. degree in biology and chemistry. He then went on to receive a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1973, from Texas A&M University. Upon graduation, Chris completed an internship with the Lexington equine firm of Hagyard-Davidson-and McGee. He then moved on to take the position as resident veterinarian and assistant farm manager for the famed Gainesway Farm (http://www.gainesway.com/) for a period of eight years. Working side by side with owner John R. Gaines and general manager Joe L. Taylor, he saw the farm’s stallion roster expand from 14 to an unprecedented 52. Chris traveled extensively to help acquire some of the world’s most influential sires; Lyphard, Blushing Groom, Green Dancer, and Riverman from France, Sharpen Up from England, Mt. Hagen from Ireland, Dust Commander from Japan, Sweet Candy from Venezuela, and Plumb Bold from South Africa, to name a few. Also under his care were notable sires Bold Bidder, Vaguely Noble, Cannonade, Cannonero II, Empery, Youth, Silent Screen, Icecapade, and Crimson Satan. The award winning stallion complex at Gainesway was built during these years and Chris’ input into its design resulted in a facility both beautiful and functional. During the height of the breeding season, it was commonplace to cover 20+ mares per hour by natural cover!
After a four year stint in Aiken, South Carolina, as general manager for Paul Rothfuss’ Ryedale Plantation, Chris returned to private practice in Lexington. At the insistence of longtime friend and Racing Hall of Fame Trainer, Carl Nafzger, Chris became certified in veterinary acupuncture. Since 1997, Dr. Cahill has limited his practice exclusively to equine acupuncture and is currently licensed to practice in Kentucky, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and New York. His clients encompass many of America’s top race and show horse trainers, breeding farms, and sale consigners. He is an active member of various organizations including: AVMA, AAEP, IVAS, Texas VMA, Kentucky VMA, Kentucky Equine Practitioners Association and the Florida Equine Practitioners Association. Over the years, Chris has enjoyed not only the breeding and racing of thoroughbreds but also golf, bird hunting, field trialing Labrador retrievers, fly fishing, and building both bamboo and graphite custom fly rods.
